In today’s economy professional advancement is more challenging than ever. With stiff competition on every level, it’s important to develop a solid career network. The saying “It’s who you know, and more importantly it’s who knows you” is the newest mantra for the job seeking crowd. Jay Chesshir BSBA ’85, president and CEO of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, spoke at the Career Networking Reception on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
Chesshir emphasized the countless ways to network and stated, “My idea of social networking early on was a happy hour at Studebaker’s!” However, the important point is to get involved. Get engaged. And make the best of the situation. Chesshir provided examples of how he developed his network and how different opportunities were created from working hard and remaining constant.
“There’s no silver bullet. If you’re willing to work, you will succeed,” Chesshir added. He also discussed the opportunities that lie within helping non-profit organizations and being involved with the Chamber of Commerce and community boards. “You get ahead by getting involved with a nonprofit.”
In closing he shared the seven words that help better the world. “What can I do to help you?” These words offer the opportunity to have a hand in helping someone better themselves.
On that note Dr. Anthony McAdoo BSA ’98, MEd ’05, EdD ’10, senior director of the Arkansas Alumni Association, gave a demonstration of the new Arkansas Alumni Career Network, including Razorback CareerLink, the new alumni career network designed to help you succeed in all your professional endeavors.
