In a historic landslide vote, University of Arkansas graduate Ricardo Martinelli won the presidential election in Panama on May 3. Martinelli, 57, of the opposition Alliance for Chance, was declared the winner with 87 percent of the votes counted.

Linda Y. Bedford Jackson was named president of the University of Arkansas Black Alumni Society during a recent reunion gathering in Fayetteville. Jackson, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1980 from the university, will serve a two-year term. She currently serves as director of communications and marketing at Huston-Tillotson University, which is a historically black institution located in Austin, Texas.

The Arkansas Alumni Association hosted the Spring Ring Ceremony on April 21, 2009, at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House to celebrate the 2009 Spring Ring recipients. The record-breaking crowd of ring recipients and their family members joined the Alumni Association in cheer as the students received their rings and helped continue the tradition.

The Bill and JoElla Toller Celebration Bell at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House tolled April 22 in honor of the Lemke department of journalism scholarship recipients. A scholarship reception was held in their honor in Boyer Hall of the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.
