The Student Alumni Board and the Student Alumni Association are excited about this week’s Homecoming events. The theme this year is “Every Day is a Hog Holiday!” The Homecoming Committee is excited to bring a week full of activities for both the student body as well as alumni with a philanthropic aspect. This year there is more collaboration with various organizations to add more events to the calendar as well as to engage students with more opportunities to give back to the community.
Homecoming week kicked off with Make a Difference Day, followed by the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Oct. 24 and 25with more than 1,500 units of blood donated. Other philanthropic events consist of “Hogs to Heroes,” in which the veteran community was honored. “Create a Hog” in the Arkansas Union on Wednesday will raise donations for the March of Dimes. The 5Kans Razorback 5K on Thursday supports the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry. The entry fee for the 5K was five canned goods. Nearly 10,735 cans have been collected. SAB and SAA also hosted a Chili Cook-Off Contest at the Gardens. Participants in the Chili Cook-Off represented Greek Life, Registered Student Organizations and U of A residence halls. The chili will be donated to Seven Hills Homeless Shelter in Fayetteville.
These philanthropic events not only raise the spirit of community service but also show the pride of the University of Arkansas with campus involvement. This year the SAB and SAA hope to increase the involvement of not only the student body but the Fayetteville community as well. Businesses will participate in “Decorate the District Red,” in which Homecoming pride will be displayed in windows on Dickson Street, The Square and other various locations.
