My first homecoming is one for the books. I have never been a part of a college homecoming. Honestly, I didn’t realize how big they were. This year’s homecoming was interesting because I didn’t just watch from the sidelines, I felt a part of it.
I am a Kappa Kappa Gamma, and two of our girls were in the running for queen. My experience started with campaigning for them. This consisted of putting up posters of their faces everywhere, putting the pictures all over social networks, writing on the sidewalks, and passing out candy. Even though I wasn’t actually in homecoming, getting to campaign for two amazing girls that I knew made me feel just as special.
With the good comes the bad, but the bad wasn’t actually that bad. When I say bad, I mean the pomping. If you don’t know what pomping it, it is basically rolling little pieces of tissue paper into balls until your palms hurt. At the beginning of all the pomping I couldn’t understand why we had to do it. I didn’t understand that all of it was a part of a big picture. We ended up taking all the small tissue paper balls and making huge pictures. The beginning was rough but the final product was amazing.
The best part of my homecoming experience was spending so much time with my sisters and coming in second. On Thursday night, we had the parade and pep rally. We won the pep rally, but the best feeling came from seeing all the smiling faces of the kids watching the parade. Knowing that they are looking up to us gives me the best feeling in the world. I am so proud to be apart of a school with such a great reputation. I would not want to have spent my first college homecoming any other way.
