When asked to describe what my job entails, I often respond by saying “I talk to a parade.”
I have that sense again today.
Earlier in the summer, the Arkansas Alumni Association conducted an online survey seeking the opinions of alumni – members, lapsed members and non-members. We wanted to find out what they thought about us, our programs, our communications efforts and membership in the organization.
Read about the Alumni Attitude Survey and some of the results. In future months, @Arkansas will spotlight what you have told us and what we are doing about it.
In my opinion, the results indicate that we need to get up on that reviewing stand and continue to address the parade of alumni and continue to tell the story of the association.
One response in particular sets the stage. We asked alumni to identify themselves as a current annual member, life member or never been a member. Ninety-five percent of those who said they were life members were either lapsed or never members.
That response, coupled with confusion about what the association does, presents our biggest challenge. Somehow, we need to continue our education process.
Other question responses and open-ended comments presented by those taking the survey tell us that we call asking for money (the Annual Fund makes telephone solicitations,) we have cars towed from campus parking lots on football game days because the spaces are reserved for “alumni” (the Razorback Foundation controls game day parking on campus,) and that we spend too much energy (or not enough) on the Razorbacks.
On more positive notes, alumni praise us for our scholarship program, which is primarily supported by Hog license plates and a portion of membership dues, our efforts to communicate about the university using all available forms of media, and providing volunteer opportunities to support the university and local communities.
Our greatest challenge, however, seems to be in reaching the youngest generation. They know little about the association in spite of our efforts on campus through the Student Alumni Board and R.E.A.L. Razorbacks.
If you were part of the survey, we thank you for your time and candor. We heard you and will be striving during the next year to continue to improve upon what we do… and talk to the parade about it.
I think it is time the Association got out of its glass house and realize what the Alumni really want.

What is IT that alumni really want?
Mike, I tried a couple of times to post a response. Looks like it did not work. I think that most Alumni would like to be treated with a little more respect. I recently purchased tickets for the Southwest Classic. I was treated like a second class citizen. I purchased the $125.00 level tickets. My guess is because I do not support the Foundation I received somewhat less than desirable seats in that section. I know the Foundation controlls most of the Athelitics at the UofA. I would think that withou a University there would be no Foundation. Alumni should have some consideration without having to support he Foundation . I would like to know also how many out of state alums there are. It appears, with a few exceptions, that most benefits of being an Association member are for those who live in Arkansas and near the University. I tried to use the discount online with Days Inn for our trip to Ft. Worth without any luck. I got a AAA rates at a Quality that were adequate. Just A thought that benefits could be improved for all alumni.
I think that the Assoc. is doing an outstanding job in most areas. However, it appears that the message is not getting out. Thanks Joe, Member since 1992. Have a great week. I may see you this weekend.
Joe, sorry about the delay in getting your comments online. We currently review all the comments to avoid inappropriate language or slander and sometimes get a back log of comments. We appreciate your comments and wanted to let you know that Mike will get back with you once he gets back from the Southwest Classic. Thanks for your continued support.
Thanks. Joe

Some of my family members and I really enjoyed the ice cream social at our Alum House this fall. I think it’s great we help collect school supplies for school children. Also, our scholarship recipients were very impressive.
Personally, I enjoyed meeting some new people and renewing a friendship with a school friend I hadn’t seen in years. Thank you and all the people who help make so many fun and worthwhile things happen.

I had a chance to review the survey results and it’s an amazing (and valuable) volume of information. Congratulations on asking some very important questions and engaging alumni in the process. The attitudes revealed will help guide my work immensely. Thanks for sharing this very frank information with alumni.
