Kenda Heavner is a double graduate of the University of Arkansas and a life member of the Arkansas Alumni Association. She earned her master’s degree in journalism in May. She presented her thesis research at the annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). She won third place in the national student competition. Collin Brunner B.S.H.E.S.’10, assistant director of membership experience, visited with Heavner this month (September). The following is an edited transcript of their Q&A.
Did you have a mentor, class or activity that enhanced your campus experience?
Throughout undergraduate and graduate school at the U of A, I worked under Dr. Rob Wells, the graduate coordinator for the journalism school. Dr. Wells accepted me as a member of the five-year combined B.A. and M.A. cohort, giving me the opportunity to take graduate-level classes during my senior year. Because of Dr. Well’s advice and help, I graduated early while working as a graduate assistant, teaching a class, and conducting research for my master’s thesis. I’m forever grateful for his guidance and academic counsel throughout my studies, and can’t implore students enough to take advantage of opportunities like the five-year cohort offered at the U of A.
What are your favorite memories or places to visit on campus?
I always viewed the first day of class as a holiday. Reconnecting with friends, finalizing a schedule, and finding downtime between classes created a distinct buzz on campus. Every semester, I specifically looked forward to studying at Arsaga’s in the Law Library. It was the best place to catch up on reading (or with a friend) and grab some local coffee. Even in the hot, August weather, simply walking across campus was a treat. As you glance down at the names on Senior Walk, it’s easy to remember those who came before you and who made campus the special place it is. I can’t wait to visit and find my name on Senior Walk soon, and I’m honored to have left the U of A a little better than I found it.
What does membership in the Arkansas Alumni Association mean to you?
I am so grateful to be a lifetime member of the Arkansas Alumni Association. The opportunity to connect with fellow U of A alumni is so special and one that I know will continue to shape my life. Being a Razorback is one of my proudest accomplishments and I hope to cross paths with many other Arkansas Alumni members in my life!
