As 2025 comes to a close, we are filled with gratitude for the generosity of alumni, families and friends who helped propel the Land of Opportunity Scholarship initiative forward. Your support is already making a tangible difference — opening doors, removing barriers and helping students from every corner of Arkansas pursue their dreams.

Throughout 2025, hundreds of you answered the call — some with first-time gifts, while others continued their support. And behind each gift is a story. Here’s what a few of our donors had to say about why they chose to give:

University of Arkansas alumna Kathleen Riggs B.S.E. ’79, M.Ed.’91, gave a $25,000 gift to the Land of Opportunity Scholarship Endowment in memory of her parents, alumni McKay Riggs B.S.E.E. ’47 and Virginia Breit Riggs B.A. ’47.

“As a counselor, I worked with students who had means and whose parents had gone to college — they understood the process, knew the expectations and had the tools to succeed. Many students don’t grow up with that knowledge. They’re approaching a world that is unfamiliar and intimidating. This scholarship provides the support they need to be successful.”

U of A alumna and Life Member Debbie Shearer King B.S.B.A.’79 and her husband, William, have committed $50,000 to the Land of Opportunity Scholarship endowment.

“Arkansas students need to know that we have their backs. In time, we hope they will recognize the significance of that gift and be encouraged to give back themselves, either through their time or dollars or both. That’s what will move the state forward.”

A $100,000 planned gift from U of A alumnus, Life Member and member of Arkansas Alumni National Board of Directors Oliver Sims B.S.B.A.’85 and his wife, April, will establish the Oliver and April Sims Land of Opportunity Scholarship Endowment.

“This scholarship is about strengthening Arkansas. By supporting Arkansas students, we increase the chances of them staying and making a difference in their communities.”

Your gifts help create access to education, mentorship and life-changing experiences for Arkansas students. The momentum you’ve helped build is powerful, and we are honored to walk alongside you in this important work.
