Pay It Forward: Scholars Say Thank You

Andrea Webster and Latosha Wilkes would like to thank the Black Alumni Society for awarding them scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year. Webster received the BAS Endowed Scholarship and Wilkes received the BAS Challenge Scholarship.   Dear Black Alumni Society members, I would like to thank all of the Black Alumni Society members for the generous Black Alumni Society Endowed Scholarship of $2,600 awarded annually for four years. This scholarship has already lifted a huge financial burden off of my shoulders. Because of this scholarship, I am motivated to work even harder to keep my grades up, in hopes of showing you all my dearest appreciation. I am a young lady from a small town in Southern Arkansas called Parkdale. I attended and graduated from Hamburg High School and decided to attend the University of Arkansas because it is one of the best schools in the state. As a freshman, I am already looking at different organizations to see what fits me and will be best in allowing me to focus on my studies. The computer science program here is amazing, and I hope to major in that field. I hope that I can accomplish all of my expectations and more at this university. Prayers for the Matheney Family The Black Alumni Society would like to extend our sincere condolences to the late Bishop Matheney family. Bishop Matheney’s homecoming celebration was held on August 3, 2011 in Crossett, Arkansas. Survivors include a loving wife of fifty-five years, Mrs. Verleen Danzy Matheney; six sons, Supt. Roy (Dana) Matheney, Elder Ricky (Lisa) Matheney, and Mr. Ralph Matheney, all of Crossett, AR; Elder Ronald (Helen) Matheney, of Camden, AR, Elder Rodney Matheney of Conway, AR, and Dr. Robert “Dennis” (Beverly) Matheney of New Orleans, LA; two sisters; Missionary Yvonne Rucker, Missionary Lois (Robert) Cole, both Los Angeles, CA; three brothers; Mr. Eddie Earl Matheney of Atlanta, GA; Bishop Willie Joe (Jean) Matheney of New Port Richey, FL; and Mr. Marvin Matheney of Sacramento, CA; twenty grandchildren; LaTonya, Toya, Tiffany, Stephanie, Natalie, Patrice, Alicia, Myesha, Shambrhee, Candice, Chloe, Jarrod, Aaron, Gabriel, Zachary, Judah, Benjamin, Keith, David, and Daniel; two great grandchildren; Nicholas and Vaelyn; a special aunt, Mrs. Novella Lewis of Little Rock, AR; the Danzy family, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
