The iconic and legendary Nikki Giovanni kicked off the university’s distinguished lecturer series on October 16, 2011. She discussed her experiences in the civil rights movement and gave a lecture on life and love. She encouraged all students to be open to life and all of its experiences.  Giovanni also talked about how we need to embrace change and be accepting of all the differences of people. With all of the differences that divide us, there are so many commonalities that unite us all.  Due to the uncertain times that we live in, her message was well received. Prior to her public lecture she met with students at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House. Giovanni’s lecture was a great one and was filled with spirit, enthusiasm and hope for the future.  She is a great speaker and has truly been an advocate of change in her career as a public servant.
