Your Black Alumni Society has been involved in a number of community events and activities during the last quarter. However, the greatest sense of pride comes from the scholarship support that the society provides to deserving black students attending the University of Arkansas.

The last Black Alumni Society board meeting in Fayetteville afforded members the opportunity to review heartfelt letters from students seeking assistance. The recent board meeting during the Silas Hunt Awards Legacy Awards Celebration in Little Rock provided an opportunity to not only honor the first black student admitted to the UA law school but to reflect upon the work of BAS. Lonnie R. Williams, one of the founders of BAS and the vision behind the BAS reunion, was recognized. Follow the links to view photographs. Congratulations to Lonnie and all of this year’s recipients.

The board has established new scholarships such as the Black Alumni Society Legacy Club that will benefit legacy students. You asked for legacy scholarship opportunities and we’re pleased to make them available. However, the work begins to make the scholarships beneficial to prospective students.

You will receive messages in a few weeks about the 2011 Black Alumni Society Reunion. So, stay tuned and get ready for an exciting gathering.
