Torry Farnell, of Hot Springs, has been awarded the 2011 Razorback Generations Scholarship by the Arkansas Alumni Association. In high school, Farnell focused much of her time on her studies, however, the stresses of school took its toll. Deciding to transform herself mentally, physically and academically, Farnell soon found herself performing better in school and living a healthier life. During this process, her college search began, which ultimately led her to the University of Arkansas.

While visiting her brother, who attends the university, she became comfortable with Fayetteville and its campus. Impressed with the campus, its amenities and its people, Farnell knew it would be difficult to consider any other university, especially since she has a potbelly pig at home named Razor.

Now as she prepares to begin her freshman year, she expresses her gratitude for the scholarship she has been given, saying, “Thank you so much for your generous scholarship support. Receiving the Razorback Generations Scholarship for $2,500 per year has relieved a huge financial burden. With this scholarship, I will not have to work multiple jobs, allowing me to maintain a more balanced lifestyle. With more time to devote to my studies, I will be better positioned to graduate with Honors which will improve my likelihood of being accepted into graduate school.”

Already making plans for her time spent on campus, Farnell plans to major in communication disorders, with a focus on speech pathology. Deciding to pursue a minor in music, she intends to get involved in a campus choir. Aside from her academics, and in an effort to continue with her healthy lifestyle, she will be teaching Zumba classes at the HPER building and joining Campus Crusades for Christ as a way to keep herself “well-grounded and balanced.”
