Living in Chicago, Monique Brunson is far from the rolling hills of Arkansas.
The Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen M’Kenzie Wilson, of Little Rock, to receive the 2011-2012 “Roads” Scholarship. Attending the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, Wilson has always made academics a top priority in her life, saying of her school, “It has been one of the most beneficial experiences on an academic level.”

Growing up with a father who works in sales and a grandfather who worked in public relations, Shannon Riordan, a Little Rock native, knew her future career would include business. When deciding where she would attend college, she set her sights on the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas.
Dr. Michelle R. Smith has assumed the role of director of the Arkansas Department of Health’s (ADH) Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Paul Halverson, director and state health officer, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Smith to the ADH family. She brings a great deal of expertise to public health in Arkansas. Since 1999, she was the program coordinator for the HIV/AIDS program with Jefferson Comprehensive Care Systems in Pine Bluff and provided support services to women, youth, adolescents, infants and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. She has also worked with the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, the Arkansas Minority HIV/AIDS Task Force and the National Minority AIDS Council. She has extensive training and understanding of day-to-day program activities and grant reporting and coordination. Addressing health disparities in our state is one of our strategic priorities, and Dr. Smith will be vital to these initiatives.”
The Department of Arkansas Heritage (DAH) announced today that H. L. McGill will be director of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center (MTCC), the department’s museum for African American culture. The museum offers exhibits and programming about African Americans in Arkansas from 1870 to the present, especially concerning their contributions to business, politics and the arts. His position will be effective Dec. 13.
