The Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Haley Pyland with the 2011 “Roads” Scholarship. Growing up in Cabot, Pyland took on many leadership roles while in high school. Serving as president of Key Club her senior year and vice president of Crown Club, she claims to have logged “over fifty hours of community service.”
The Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Logan DeWhitt with the 2011 “Roads” Scholarship. A resident of Lonoke, athletics, academics and student involvement were all important aspects of DeWhitt’s high school years.
The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen Heather Randall to receive the $1,000 scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. A resident of Fayetteville, Randall has been a student at the University of Arkansas since 2007.
Hoping to help lessen the financial burden of college, Paul Drake is thankful to receive the 2011 Membership Scholarship from the Arkansas Alumni Association.

As the youngest of eight children, Jessica Gudino Willis, a Benton native, thought it would be impossible for her to afford the University of Arkansas. Luckily, a visit to the campus on Scholars Day changed her mind.
Springdale native Regina Hopper B.A.’81, J.D. ’85 will return to the University of Arkansas campus on Feb. 28-March1 as the Arkansas Alumni Association’s 2011 Johnson Fellow. Hopper, who resides in Alexandria, Va., is president and CEO of America’s Natural Gas Alliance, which is dedicated to increasing appreciation of the environmental, economic and national security benefits of clean, abundant and affordable North American natural gas.
Dr. Paul Adams is an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas. His love for science began when he was just a little boy playing with mason jars and bees. But it wasn’t until Dr. Adams began working as a student researcher during his junior year in college when he realized he wanted to become an academic researcher.
Dr. Michelle R. Smith has assumed the role of director of the Arkansas Department of Health’s (ADH) Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Paul Halverson, director and state health officer, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Smith to the ADH family. She brings a great deal of expertise to public health in Arkansas. Since 1999, she was the program coordinator for the HIV/AIDS program with Jefferson Comprehensive Care Systems in Pine Bluff and provided support services to women, youth, adolescents, infants and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. She has also worked with the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, the Arkansas Minority HIV/AIDS Task Force and the National Minority AIDS Council. She has extensive training and understanding of day-to-day program activities and grant reporting and coordination. Addressing health disparities in our state is one of our strategic priorities, and Dr. Smith will be vital to these initiatives.”
Living in Kansas City, Phil Schoettlin does not let the distance between Fayetteville and Missouri keep him from staying connected with the University of Arkansas. Serving as president of the Arkansas Alumni Association’s Greater Kansas City Chapter and as a member of the Kappa Sigma XI Corporation and XI Alumni Association, Schoettlin enjoys the time he spends interacting with students and alumni.
