The Arkansas Alumni Association and the U of A recognize faculty with the Faculty Distinguished Achievement and the Charles and Nadine Baum Faculty Teaching Awards.
The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Kathryn Stonesifer with a $1,000 scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. Attending high school in West Fork, she is the first in her family to go to college.
The Northwest Arkansas Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Bethany Fink with a $1,000 scholarship. A resident of Springdale, Fink is currently a senior at the University of Arkansas and is studying career and technical education in the College of Education and Health Professions.
Nikki Munro, of Hot Springs, has been awarded the 2011 Garland County Chapter Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. Attending Lakeside High School, Munro spent much of her time taking AP courses, being a member of Beta Club, FCA, student council, National Honors Society, and participating in cheer and soccer.

Since 1961, the Arkansas Alumni Association has proudly recognized the exemplary achievements of University of Arkansas faculty through the Arkansas Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Achievement Awards amongst three categories of accomplishment: teaching, research and public service. Additionally, the University of Arkansas honors a faculty member with the Charles and Nadine Baum Faculty Teaching Award. For the first time, the Baum Award winner also will be honored at the Alumni Awards Celebration during Homecoming this fall.

Dr. Michelle R. Smith has assumed the role of director of the Arkansas Department of Health’s (ADH) Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities. Dr. Paul Halverson, director and state health officer, said, “We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Smith to the ADH family. She brings a great deal of expertise to public health in Arkansas. Since 1999, she was the program coordinator for the HIV/AIDS program with Jefferson Comprehensive Care Systems in Pine Bluff and provided support services to women, youth, adolescents, infants and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. She has also worked with the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, the Arkansas Minority HIV/AIDS Task Force and the National Minority AIDS Council. She has extensive training and understanding of day-to-day program activities and grant reporting and coordination. Addressing health disparities in our state is one of our strategic priorities, and Dr. Smith will be vital to these initiatives.”
