The Mid-South Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Kristen Holmes with a $1,000 scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. A resident of Turrell, AR, Holmes graduated with honors and ranked in the top three percent of her class. Taking AP courses while in high school, she also managed to earn 24 hours of college credit which she is allowed to put toward her degree at the University of Arkansas.

Although her mother is an alumna of the university, she said, “My parents gave me full reign to select from any of Arkansas’ four year institutions to attend college.” After touring the campus and researching the various programs that the university offers, Holmes knew the University of Arkansas would be where she would attend college.

“I would like to thank you for your generous financial support. By awarding me the Mid-South Chapter Scholarship, valued at $1,000, you have tremendously lessened my family’s financial burden. My father is a self-employed farmer who has a very unpredictable income and my mother is employed by the state and although I received a composite score of 28 on the ACT, I did not qualify for nearly enough financial aid to cover the cost of my attendance.  Thanks to your generosity, my family’s burden will be much lighter,” she stated.

As a result of her own “personal medical history,” she has opted to pursue a degree in kinesiology. Experiencing multiple orthopedic surgeries herself, Holmes is appreciative of the doctors and physical therapists that not only helped her, but provided her with a passion to help others. Along with her studies, she was selected from a group of 125 students to participate in the Student Athletic Training Program which she believes will provide “invaluable” experience.
