Kayla Sligh, of Hot Springs, has been chosen to receive the 2011 Garland County Chapter Scholarship, in the amount of $1,500. An honors graduate of Lakeside High School, Sligh participated in the color guard and played clarinet for her school band. Wishing to continue with her musical involvement, she found that she could do so at the University of Arkansas. Viewing the university as a place of “prestige and tradition,” she saw this as an opportunity to further her education and succeed academically.

“I would like to sincerely thank the Garland County Chapter of the University of Arkansas Alumni for the $1,500 scholarship that I received for my freshman year at The University of Arkansas. I plan to attend the university to obtain my master’s degree in Communication Disorders; therefore, this scholarship award will greatly help the financial burden that I will be under as a result of both undergraduate and graduate studies. Furthermore, this scholarship will allow me to defer large amounts of debt due to inflating living costs and create an opportunity for me to attend college in our current economic downturn,” she said in her thank you letter to the chapter.

With a goal of majoring in communication disorders, Sligh already knows that she wants to continue her education at the university by getting her master’s after she graduates. Excited about the various opportunities that will be made available to her; she looks forward to participating in the Razorback Marching Band, Associated Student Government and medical science clubs.

“Thank you again for this great opportunity and financial blessing. Your generosity through this scholarship is allowing not only me, but many others to pursue their dreams in the hopes of one day becoming leaders in their field of study. God bless.”
