Joseph Byford has been chosen as a recipient of the $1,000 scholarship awarded by the Tri-State Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association. Having always loved math and physics in high school, Byford looked for colleges with good engineering programs.

After visiting the University of Arkansas, he realized that he belonged on its campus. Touring the College of Engineering and the campus, he knew immediately that it had “the right combination of academics and social life.  I knew that I would not have to sacrifice one for the other,” he said.

“Thank you for your financial support as I continue my education.  The $1,000 granted by the Tri-State Chapter Scholarship will be a tremendous help, both financially and academically.  This scholarship will help with handling my financial obligations as well as allowing me to focus more on school rather than acquiring income.  I will work hard to ensure that your generosity gives back many times over,” he said in his thank you letter.

Already a member of the Engineering Thematic Learning Community, Byford sees it as a great way to meet the faculty and students who belong to the engineering program. Opting to major in mechanical engineering, his top priority as a student is to focus on his studies and graduate from the Honors College. However, when he does have time, he plans to take part in on-campus activities, as well as attend Razorback sporting events.

“Again, thank you so much for your generous donation.  I will make sure it is put to good use.  This scholarship will be a tremendous help as I figure out how to deal with paying for school in these economic times.  Thank you so much for this financial assistance.”
