The Dallas Chapter of the Arkansas Alumni Association has chosen to award Courtney Hayden, a native of Dallas, TX, with a scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. Transferring from Southern Methodist University to the University of Arkansas her sophomore year, she is glad she made the move to Fayetteville and feels fortunate to have her family supporting her in her decision.

“Thank you so much for awarding me the Dallas Chapter Scholarship. I am applying to Pharmacy and Medical School this year and I need to put in every effort to keep up my grades so I have the best possible chance of getting in,” she said. “Summer is usually the time I work the most and save up for school. This upcoming fall and spring semesters will also be very rigorous for me since I picked up two more minors in addition to my major and other minor (total of 3 minors). This scholarship will allow me to dedicate more of my time towards school and focus on studying for the MCAT and PCAT too.”

Pursuing a degree in engineering, she decided to switch her major and instead, focus on animal science. Recently finishing her equine science minor, Hayden opted to pursue minors in chemistry and agricultural business because the chemistry minor will “help better prepare me for the MCAT, PCAT and for school after the U of A,” and the agricultural business minor will “help me improve the way I run my ranch in West Texas that I inherited from my father,” she said.

Apart from her studies and business duties, she is a member of Alpha Zeta and Gamma Beta Phi, which are honor fraternities. She has also maintained membership in the AgBusiness Club and Block & Bridle Club.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the U of A and am grateful to have had the opportunity to attend school here. Thank you so much again for this generous scholarship. I intend on carrying on what I have learned here with me to whatever school or career I pursue after the U of A.”
