Alumni & Students Show that Community Service is Important

One of the important trends we have seen recently during our annual scholarship review sessions is the heavy emphasis incoming students have placed on community service. As those classes have graduated, we have seen community service as an important volunteer opportunity for alumni. In the past month, we have seen two great examples of how that “Helpin’ Like a Hog” mentality is alive and well.

Fleming, Watson Receive 2011 Senior Honor Citation

University of Arkansas graduating seniors Billy Fleming of Fort Smith and Kristin A. Watson of Benton were recognized with the 2011 Senior Honor Citation during the Arkansas Alumni Association Board of Directors luncheon on May 13. The award recognizes a senior man and woman who exhibit outstanding academic achievement, campus and community involvement and leadership. Students were required to be a member of the graduating class of 2011 (finishing degree requirements in August or December 2010 or May 2011.) The citation includes a personal memento, a $500 cash award, life membership in the Arkansas Alumni Association as well as permanent recognition on the student Honor Wall at the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House.

The Arkansas Alumni Association Announces Helpin' Like a Hog Program

In connection with the Arkansas Alumni Association’s volunteer engagement program, the Association is pleased to announce the creation of “Helpin’ Like a Hog.” Only a few weeks into the planning process, staff members have come together to create a program that will help to engage alumni who express an interest in community service.
